Raeford, North CarolinaNovember 16, 2016The $20,000 War Horse Event Series (WHES) presented by Southern Pines Equine Associates and Adequan® concluded its spectacular 2016 season over the weekend of November 12-13th with the November WHES Championship and Horse Trials. After a successful inaugural series, the Carolina Horse Park and loyal WHES sponsors raised the bar in 2016 by enhancing hospitality and awarding over $40,000 in prize money and products.

The WHES is dedicated to providing competitors the opportunity to learn the sport of eventing in a formal yet unrecognized setting. Held at the Carolina Horse Park, this unique series is designed to introduce the sport to young horses and grass-roots riders through pre-competition schooling opportunities while providing the highest quality course design, footing and hospitality. Additionally, an unprecedented amount of prize money and products are awarded across the levels in celebration of the dedication, hard work, and passion of WHES competitors.

“Jim and I are extremely proud of our partnership with the War Horse Event Series at The Carolina Horse Park,” said Southern Pines Equine Associates’ Dr. Tom Daniel. “Most importantly we want to recognize and reward the base of our sport, the ‘lower levels’. Our philosophy and that of the WHES is that it’s perfectly fine to find your permanent place at these levels and remove the stigma of not moving up. That is why the prize packages for Green as Grass are exactly the same as Training. Finally, we know that these riders are the driving force of the entire discipline.”

Led by Southern Pines Equine Associates, Adequan®, and new 2016 sponsor Merial, the WHES has thrived with the support of local and national Sponsors who all believe in the importance of the Series.

“The Carolina Horse Park is grateful to have the support of distinguished companies like Southern Pines Equine Associates, Adequan, and Merial without whom the Series could not operate on such a professional level,” said Carolina Horse Park Program Director Marc Donovan. “The cornerstone of our schooling oriented series is that it provides a recognized show environment with an educational component. The Veterinary presence at these competitions offers unparalleled insight into the care and support available to horsemen at this level.”

The WHES is also dedicated to providing opportunities to Off The Track Thoroughbreds and Rescue Horses through a second career in the sport of eventing. Thus creating the Aberdeen Feed and Supply Second Chance Award to reward people who engage in providing another career for these horses. In 2016, a total of $10,000 in prize money was award in the Second Chance division, with $5,000 going to the overall champion.

In 2016, the WHES selected the Warriors Claim Thoroughbred Rehabilitation Program as the name charity, with over $5,000 going to the outstanding organization. The Warrior’s Claim Program has soldiers with PTSD and other combat related issues work with horses which need specialized training and attention before being repurposed. By design, the program encourages both horse and human to help heal each other. When the horses are far enough along they are sold and the proceeds are used to help acquire new candidates and allow for a long term sustainable therapeutic effort.

At the close of the November WHES Championship and Horse Trial year-end prizes were awarded to those on the tops of the Individual and Team, Second Chance, TIP, and 4H Leaderboards.
